The organization of outpatient pain therapy

Parents who wish to bring their child to our outpatient clinic can contact us by telephone. Questionnaires are then sent to them.
When we have received the filled-out questionnaires (for example, the German Pain Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents) and all currently available test results (for example, letter from doctor, investigation results), the parents are contacted to make the first appointment.

The parents bring a referral from their family doctor or pediatrician to the appointment.

The first appointment usually takes place in the morning and lasts at least 60 minutes. Dr. Zernikow or one of his supervising pediatricians, a psychologist, and possibly also a pediatric nurse will be present. During the course of the discussion we get an overview of the diagnostic and therapeutic measures that have taken place so far and answer any questions the patient and parents may have. Together it is decided whether further therapy should proceed on an outpatient or inpatient basis. Outpatient therapy is usually adequate. Subsequent appointments follow every three to six months.

Outpatient therapy is covered by medical insurance if a referral by a pediatrician is presented.
