“Severe chronic pain is a societal problem, and more than 300,000 children are affected in Germany. Many of these children significantly reduce their normal daily activities, such as school, sports and hobbies, so that their age-appropriate development is threatened. Current efforts to tackle this important issue are in sharp contrast to the explosive nature of this syndrome, just as research into childhood pain is clearly underrepresented worldwide. With the German Paediatric Pain Centre, an institution has been created that has the potential to answer important research questions comprehensively. As president of the German Society for the Study of Pain I am very happy to be a founding partner of the German Paediatric Pain Centre.”
