CRPS – complex regional pain syndrome

  • CRPS hand (pain in the hand)

Synonyms used for CRPS are reflex dystrophy, morbus sudeck, sudeck dystrophy, algodystrophy  and sympathetic reflex dystrophy. CRPS is a special kind of chronic pain condition that can be triggered by minor injuries, such as a sprained foot, but also by severe injuries. Over time pain develops in the affected area, for example, the foot or the hand, that can be so severe that even the movement of air over the area can be perceived as intolerable. At the same time, the affected area is clearly swollen, and visible skin changes appear.

Therapy of CRPS

The German Paediatric Pain Centre has developed a multimodal treatment concept that has proven itself over time. Fortunately, we can completely do without the use of strong pain medications or invasive methods, such as injecting anesthetics into nerve plexuses. The concept is specially suited to the needs of children and adolescents, and focuses on the biopsychosocial causes of illness.
